The "new you" fallacy
It’s this wonderful time of the year when people make new year resolutions and waste money on gym memberships. Everyone sort of knows willpower doesn’t work but plays the game anyway.
With all the mindfulness and self-improvement trends, many people have a desire to create the “new self,” to be something else, someone greater, yada-yada. I don’t believe in the “new you” mentality — the only authentically yours path forward is from within, from what you already have, from the “old you.” Rather than creating what you want to be, you need to rediscover who you truly are — the child that is dangerously fearless, endlessly curious, and annoyingly persistent.
In 2023, do what keeps you up at night. Do something you denied yourself or were shit-scared of doing.
And if the true you wants to get a message into the world by starting a podcast, “Metacast: podcast about podcasting” will be of great help and inspiration. However, if it is the “new you” that’s into podcasting (and maybe even made a New Year resolution!), Metacast will work just as well. Whichever camp you’re in, we’re here for you!
The Metacast podcast is launching on January 4th, 2023 in all podcasting apps, YouTube, and obviously in this newsletter, so don’t forget to enter your email below to subscribe!
Happy holidays!*
*I’m using the politically correct version of “Merry Christmas” because I know how weird it is to get wishes for the holiday you don’t celebrate. In my native Orthodox Christian tradition, we celebrate Christmas on January 7th (it’s a long, boring story about calendars) and I’m not assimilated in the U.S. enough to let that tradition go. December 25th is just a regular day for us and our kids get their presents on January 1st (long story about communists who substituted religious holidays with secular ones).
P.S. Oh, and by the way — I’ve just started a video blog on Instagram where I’ll be posting videos of how we create our podcast in real time. Follow me on Instagram at @podcasthacks
